C.H.S. THEATRE PRESENTS The Theory of Relativity Music and Lyrics by Neil Bartram Book by Brian Hill On-demand until April 2022
ABOUT THE SHOW (From Music Theatre International) This moving and unconventional song cycle bursts with originality as it examines the interconnectedness of us all through life's shared experiences - from the hilarious to the heartbreaking. The Theory of Relativity is a joyous and moving look at our surprisingly intertwined lives. Whether you're allergic to cats, in love for the first or tenth time, a child of divorce, a germaphobe or simply a unique individual, audience members and actors alike are sure to find themselves in this fresh new musical.
Through a seemingly unrelated collection of songs, scenes and monologues, The Theory of Relativity introduces a compelling array of characters experiencing the joys and heartbreaks, the liaisons and losses, the inevitability and the wonder of human connection. "Take a Physics manual, blend it with the sound of The Book of Mormon, the hilariously nerdy references of The Big Bang Theory , a sprinkle of Chicago, few drops of Glee, bake it in a Broadway bowl, use all the originality you can have...That’s the successful recipe for the spectacular song cycle, The Theory of Relativity."
The Theory of Relativity was developed at the Canadian Musical Theatre Project and was originally produced by Goodspeed Musicals. It was presented at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's Festival of New Musicals in 2015. Here is a video of creators Neil Bartram and Brian Hill sharing how the show developed. Take a look at this video from Act Up Theatre talking about the powerful impact of the show.
SONG CYCLES A song cycle is a kind of musical where the songs are unified by a theme rather than a story. Unlike most song cycles, The Theory of Relativity does have an umbrella story that comes together as connections are revealed. It also contains dialogue and one pivotal monologue.
